The Megol family of TPE compounds offers the ideal combination of the elasticity, look and feel of rubber with the low processing costs of thermoplastics. The formulation flexibility of this polymer allows the production of grades with a very wide hardness range, suitable for a variety of applications. They are ideal for injection and extrusion moulding, and are also available in grades which are nontoxic and/or for food use. The dominant matrix of these elastomer compounds is the thermoplastic block copolymers which belong to a number of different polymer families. Typically the Megol family belongs to the styrenic class of block copolymer (SEBS, SEPS) with a hydrogenated mid-block. However there are grades of the product based on polymers of other origin. The hydrogenation process removes the double bonds in the material which is what gives these compounds their high levels of performance such as excellent age and UV light resistance. 


These products are particularly well-suited to over-moulding and extrusion and have a rigid substrate which provides their soft-touch characteristics and general similarity to rubber.

Styrenic Block Copolymers (TPS or TPE-S)
Thermoplastic elastomers described as TPS are compounds based on SBS or SEBS. In fact, the words SBS or SEBS are often used to describe these compounds when they are in fact raw materials. By describing compounds as SBS or SEBS it enables us to know the general level of performance and properties of the compound.
SBS is based on two-phase block copolymers with hard and soft segments. The styrene end blocks provide the thermoplastic properties and the Butadiene mid-blocks provide the elastomeric properties. SBS is probably the highest volume TPS material produced and is commonly used in footwear, adhesives and lower specification seals and grips, where resistance to chemicals and aging are not critical.

SBS, when hydrogenated, becomes SEBS, as the elimination of the C=C bonds in the butadiene component generated ethylene and butylenes mid-block, hence the SEBS acronym. SEBS is characterised by improved heat resistance, mechanical properties and chemical resistance. Dryflex and Mediprene compounds based on SEBS exhibit excellent weathering, UV and ozone resistance making them ideal choice for outdoor and long service life applications. SEBS based compounds adhere to engineering thermoplastics, when adhering to PP both SBS and SEBS can be used

TPEs are used where conventional elastomers cannot provide the range of physical properties needed in the product. These materials find large application in the automotive sector and in household appliances sector. In 2014 the world market for TPEs reached a volume of ca. 16.7 billion US dollars. About 40% of all TPE products are used in the manufacturing of vehicles.

For instance copolyester TPEs are used in snowmobile tracks where stiffness and abrasion resistance are at a premium. They are also widely used for catheters where nylon block copolymers offer a range of softness ideal for patients. Thermoplastic silicon and olefin blends are used for extrusion of glass run and dynamic weatherstripping car profiles. Styrene block copolymers are used in shoe soles for their ease of processing, and widely as adhesives. TPE is commonly used to make suspension bushings for automotive performance applications because of its greater resistance to deformation when compared to regular rubber bushings. TPE may also be used in medical devices and sex toys. TPE is also finding more and more uses as an electrical cable jacket and inner insulation. TPE is also used in some headphone cables.

Calenders and calendering equipment is used to process industrial plastics such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), woven and 
specialty fabrics, and high-quality paper. With plastics, heated rollers squeeze films or sheets to produce materials 
that have a glossy finish. The calendering process begins by heating and mixing resins, pigments, stabilizers and 
plasticizers in an industrial mixer. This hot mix is then passed through a two-roll mill to form the sheet. The heavy 
sheet stock is passed through a series of heated, revolving calender rollers until the desired thickness is achieved. 
Because these rollers can be damaged by metal contaminants, some calenders and calendering equipment include integral 
metal detectors. 

When the calendering process is complete, the hot sheet is cooled on a chill roller and removed as a finished sheet or 
film.

Casting process simulation uses numerical methods to calculate cast component quality considering mold filling,
solidification and cooling, and provides a quantitative prediction of casting mechanical properties, thermal

An extrusion machine is a device which pushes or pulls a material through a shaped die to form a continuous length of product with a preset cross section. The extrusion process is used to produce a large number of commercial products which include steel or copper wire, plastic tubing, plastic sheets, and many food types. Extrusion as a manufacturing process offers many benefits such as the wide range of complex cross sections possible and the ability to form brittle materials. Depending on the material used, an extrusion machine may form the material cold or hot with some types of materials being completely melted prior to extrusion.

The simplest example of an extrusion machine is a bakers piping bag. The bag is filled with icing and a fitted with a decorative piping nozzle. If the bag is squeezed, the icing fills the nozzle and is forced out or extruded as a continuous length with the same cross section as the shape of the nozzle opening. This is the same basic principle as industrial extrusion machines used to form many products using plastics, metals, and food or pharmaceutical ingredients. The only real departure from this simple example is in the complexity of the cross sections, the inclusion of hollow cores, and the fact that some machines draw the material through the die rather than pushing it.

The clamping end with moving platen takes half of the mould tool.  This opens and closes the mould and supplies sufficient force to keep the mould closed when molten plastic is injected under pressure.
The injection unit takes plastic raw material granules, heats them until molten, and injects them into the mould.  Machines have a barrel that contains a screw (imagine a kitchen mincer), the barrel has heater bands around the outside which raises the temperature to the correct level to melt the plastic.
The rotating screw forces the plastic along the barrel.  This in turn forces the screw back as the molten material collects at the end of the screw.  When the right amount of material for the next shot has accumulated the screw stops rotating.  The screw then acts like a plunger moving forward and forcing the molten plastic into the mould tool.

Injection molding is a process in which a polymer is heated to a highly plastic state and forced to flow under high pressure into a mold cavity, where it solidifies. The molded part, called a molding, is then removed from the cavity. The process produces discrete components that are almost always net shape. The production cycle time is typically in the range 10 to 30 seconds, although cycles of one minute or longer are not uncommon. Also, the mold may contain more than one cavity; so that multiple moldings are produced each cycle. 


Process and Equipment 
Equipment for injection molding evolved from metal die casting. An injection molding machine consists of two principal components: (1) the plastic injection unit and (2) the mold clamping unit. The injection unit is much like an extruder. It consists of a barrel that is fed from one end by a hopper containing a supply of plastic pellets. Inside the barrel is a screw whose operation surpasses that of an extruder screw in the following respect: in addition to turning for mixing and heating the polymer, it also acts as a ram which rapidly moves forward to inject molten plastic into the mold. A nonreturn valve mounted near the tip of the screw prevents the melt from flowing backward along the screw threads. Later in the molding cycle the ram retracts to its former position. Because of its dual action, it is called a reciprocating screw, which name also identifies the machine type. Older injection molding machines used a simple ram (without screw flights), but the superiority of the reciprocating screw design has led to its widespread adoption in today's molding plants. To summarize, the functions of the injection unit are to melt and homogenize the polymer, and then inject it into the mold cavity
