Be prepared,TPE and PVC

Be prepared,TPE and PVC

  • Author:TONY
  • Release on :2015-07-24

Perception is reality. Despite the fact that the safety of PVC has been demonstrated in a large number of scientific studies, on-going concerns about PVC by certain segments of consumers have prompted OEMs in a number of markets to specify alternate materials. While types of PVC compounds still account for the largest share of the North American compounding market, at a minimum many processors want to have a non-PVC substitute material approved and ready to run should a customer require it. Increasingly these processors are relying on compounders to supply them with modified or new grades of TPEs specifically commercialized for flexible PVC-replacement applications.

Polymers has recently introduced film-grade formulations based on its styrenic block copolymers (SBCs) to the North American market. The materials, which contain no plasticizers, are targeted for stretch-films used in food applications. The materials were first developed in response to regulations in Japan prohibiting the use of PVC in food wrap, now selling the product in Japan, as well in several European countries; and it has attracted pre-commercial interest of several North American companies. One of the key benefits of the material is that it can generally be processed on the same equipment as PVC.

With traditional SBC you usually have a high shear characteristic, so we’ve developed a low-shear product that will allow customers to use their regular equipment without additional capital investments

The SBC polymers are blended with polypropylene and the material is typically co-extruded with EVA in a three-layer structure. The film has clarity, elasticity and barrier properties similar to PVC.

What kind of stretch properties can I expect from my TPE?

What kind of stretch properties can I expect from my TPE?

Tensile Properties

Tensile properties are measurements used to describe how an elastomer performs when stretched. Several tests are commonly used to give an indication of how a TPE will perform in end-use environments.

Tensile at Break
This measurement is also called Ultimate Tensile. In this test, a piece of elastomer is stretched until it breaks. The amount of force needed to break the material is measured. Units are typically given in pounds per square inch (psi) or megaPascals (MPa). Elastomers with high ultimate tensile properties will be more difficult to break by stretching than an elastomer with lower values on this test.
Tear Strength
This value describes how well the elastomer resists tearing. The tear strength test essentially the same as the tensile at break test except the test bar is notched on one side to provide a propagation point. The material is stretched and the amount of force at which the test bar tears completely is recorded. Units are typically given in psi or kiloNewtons per meter (kN/m).
Tensile Modulus
In the tensile modulus test, the elastomer is stretched and resistance to the stretching is measured over a range of elongation points. This is often reported as tensile at various percentages of the original length of elastomer, such as 50, 100 and 300 percent. An elastomer might have a strong resistance to stretching initially but become weaker as it elongates (called "necking").
Elongation at Break
Elongation does not measure how hard or easy the material is to stretch, but simply how far it will stretch before it breaks. This is reported in percentage of original length. Some soft elastomers will stretch to greater than 1000 percent of their original length before breaking. A soft elastomeric TPE will typically have a much higher value than a hard rigid material.
Factors Affecting Values
The method in which test plaques are molded and the direction of flow affect the tensile property values. For this reason, many elastomers are measured for tensile properties in both direction of flow and transverse to direction of flow.
Direction of Flow
Like many other elastomer properties, tensile properties are affected by the orientation of the polymer molecules upon molding. Thus tensile properties can vary widely depending on whether the stretching was done in the direction of the polymer flow during molding, or in the transverse direction.
Test Plaques (Extrusion vs. Injection Molded)
Some tests are performed on injection molded plaques, while others are performed on extruded plaques. It is important to compare values only on similar test plaque types since there can be a significant difference in values.

what is TPU

what is TPU

  • Author:tony
  • Release on :2015-07-07

Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is an elastomer that is fully thermoplastic. Like all thermoplastic elastomers, TPU is elastic and melt-processable. Further, it can be processed on extrusion as well as injection, blow and compression molding equipment. It can be vacuum-formed or solution-coated and is well suited for a wide variety of fabrication methodologies. TPU can even be colored through a number of processes. But more so than any other thermoplastic elastomer, TPU can provide a considerable number of physical property combinations making it an extremely flexible material adaptable to dozens of uses.
http://www.china-tpe-material-supplier.com/news/15070708295107.html

This is partly because TPU is a linear segmented block copolymer composed of hard and soft segments. The hard segment can be either aromatic or aliphatic. Aromatic TPU's are based on isocyanates such as MDI while aliphatic TPU’s are based on isocyanates like H12 MDI. When these isocyanates are combined with short-chain diols, they become the hard block. Normally it is aromatic, but when color and clarity retention in sunlight exposure is a priority, an aliphatic hard segment is often used.

Guide to Sex Toy Materials

Guide to Sex Toy Materials

  • Release on :2015-07-02

Similar to jelly, elastomer is less dangerous and much higher quality. An elastomer is a compound that does not include phthalates. As you may have read, phthalates are “plasticizers” used to soften PVC vinyls. If vinyls do not contain any softeners, they are very hard PVC plastic. There are different grades of vinyls, from food grade for your plastic food storage containers or baggies (which don’t give off a smell) to economical grade that are used in some less expensive athletic shoes and other products. You can quickly determine the grade of the vinyls and quantity of plasticizers (phthalates) used by the smell. The more odor you smell, the lower the grade and the more phthalates used.

You are probably aware of the terrible chemical smell that many of the “jelly” vibrators give off. This is basically the vinyl off-gassing large amounts of phthalates.Elastomers are a completely different material. They start out soft and have product added to make them harder. This product is then removed by high vacuum so there are no residual hardeners. No solvents are used in this process and there is no latex. This type of material is ideal for manufacturing a variety of textures.
