With everyone back at home in the evening, parents and children pursue different activities. Dad retreats to his workshop to make progress on a wooden rocking horse for Junior. New technology allows manufacturers to overmold vibration-damping TPEs onto popular plastic substrates using two-shot injection molding. 

Another specialty TPE, configured for use with power tools having nylon grips, delivers superior resistance to chemicals, oil and abrasion. This material bonds tightly to nylon substrates to deliver a soft yet resilient grip for safety, ergonomics and comfort.

Dad puts both kids in their car seats for the trip to nursery and the office. The family vehicle offers many examples of TPE applications, from door and window seals to interior trim components to buttons and knobs, and from the floor mats to the surface of the accelerator pedal. Innovative TPE film grades for automotive interior applications such as instrument panels and door panels provide superior aesthetics, including a durable, matte finish, leather-like feel, low odor and excellent color retention. 

Under the hood, TPEs offering excellent resistance to oil and chemicals serve as fuel line covers and sleeves, cable jacketing and brake line covers. In many cases, TPEs have replaced traditional thermoset rubbers because of the streamlined processing and greater design freedom they offer.  Approximately 40 per cent of all TPE products consumed worldwide are used in the manufacture of vehicles.

Mom, who enjoys a more flexible schedule, cycles to the aquatic center before work. Her bicycle handle grips are made from a soft-touch, vibration-damping TPE for comfort, reduced impact and safety. She gets ready to swim laps in the pool by donning goggles with clear, flexible, waterproof seals made with TPEs. Afterwards, she takes her reusable commuter mug with its grip band of textured TPE (in a stylish, contrasting color) to the coffee shop for a latte. 

At the office, TPEs find application in many types of equipment, from computer mice, laptop 'feet' and desktop CPU covers to the grips on pens and pencils. At lunchtime, the staff grab their lunch containers sealed by flexible, soft-touch TPEs from the fridge.

Thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) - those flexible, rubber-like materials that can be processed using cost-effective, high-volume molding and extrusion - are steadily replacing conventional elastomers and finding new homes across a wide range of applications. Indeed, the global market for TPEs is forecast to reach $23.9 billion (£16.1 billion, €22.4 billion) by 2018, according to research firm MarketsandMarkets.
Factors driving the current 8.1 per cent growth rate for TPEs range from the need for greater design freedom than what thermoset rubbers can provide, to the growing consumer demand for safer and more sustainable materials.

One of the most attractive aspects of TPEs is their versatility. These materials offer amazing variety in hardness, surface texture, color, opacity, abrasion and chemical resistance and tear strength. They can also be overmolded onto a broad number of plastic substrates without the need for adhesives. Some specialty TPEs deliver vibration and sound damping capabilities. Others find use in food contact packaging, or have low leachables/extractables, including low levels of potentially harmful components such as bisphenol-A (BPA). 
To demonstrate the broad applications for TPEs and their benefits to consumers, let's consider a 'day in the life' of a young family.


Rise and shineBaby Bottle 
Dad is awakened by the alarm on his smartphone, whose case is overmolded with a durable, grippy and brightly-colored TPE providing usability, protection and aesthetic appeal. A wail from the nursery tells him it's time for the baby's first feed. The nipple on her bottle is injection molded from a soft but tough, BPA-free TPE. Dad also prepares a sippy cup of juice for the toddler, who likes the soft touch and primary colors of the cup lid, which is made from a food contact grade of TPE overmolded onto polypropylene. This resilient material also stands up to his sharp baby teeth.

  In the shortest way to descirbe what TPE material, it is a material that combines both thermoplastic and rubber. This material can be made to a very soft and jelly form or to a very hard form of plastic. 
  
  Most vibrators that are TPE are jelly and rubber like. Depending on the type of toy, the material compound can be the softest of a 0 compound to the hardest compound of 65. There is a lot of science involved in the making of these materials, but in short, when you are looking to purchase a vibrator, dildo, or any other toy, odds are you want it to be soft and life like. 
  With that being said, TPE is the most reliable choice. Vibrators and Dildos with TPE are generally going to be very soft, flexible, and hold elasticity. TPE toys will need to be covered at all times when not in use and need to be stored out of heat, as the material will turn to jelly.

Understanding TPEs 

Service temperature 
It is important to remember that the very thing that enables TPEs to be processed as thermoplastics also restricts their use in very high temperature applications. The continuous use temperature is the highest temperature at which a TPE will retain its elastomeric character and continue to function in an application. 
The various families of TPEs exhibit a wide range of continuous use temperatures and knowing the service temperature for an application is a critical first step in selecting the best TPE for that application. 

Continuous use temperature is reported as degrees Fahrenheit or Celsius. 
Chemical or fluid exposure 
As was the case with continuous use temperature, the various TPE families exhibit a wide range of chemical and fluid resistance. Each has its strengths and weaknesses when exposed to organic solvents, greases, acids, bases, or any of a number of other substances. 
It is important to know what, if any, chemicals or fluids a TPE may be exposed to in order to make a good material selection. 
Chemical or fluid resistance is typically reported as weight change, volume change, or specific property change resulting from a controlled exposure to a specific substance. 
Hardness requirements vs. other properties 
Hardness (typically measured on the Shore A or D scale) is probably the most common property identified with TPEs but may be the least relevant for a given application. 
Elongation at break, tensile strength, tensile modulus, tensile set, compression set, and flexural modulus are some of the engineering properties for which a TPE may be selected; and, while it is true that within a TPE family there is a general correlation between any of these properties and hardness, that correlation may not hold across families. 
For example, it is possible to have two different TPEs of the same hardness but completely different flexural modulus. 
Tear Strength 
Just as the name implies, this property is a measure of a material’s ability to resist tearing. It is an important consideration for any application in which a material will be subjected to the type of abuse that may result in tearing type of strain. 
Tear strength is measured in “pli” (pounds per linear inch) or “N/mm” (Newtons per millimeter).
Compression properties 
Response to compression is important for sealing and gasket applications. Two measures of a material’s performance under compressive load include: 
Compression set – the ability of a material to return to its original shape after being subjected to a pre-determined compressive strain or load. 
Compressive stress relaxation – the ability of a material to continue to push back against a compressive load over a period of time. 
Both are results of “cold flow” or plastic deformation of the solid TPE and both are affected by time, temperature, and chemical or fluid exposure. 
Compression set is reported as a per cent of compression that is not recovered, stress relaxation as either a per cent or absolute level of initial force that is no longer present. 
Peel Strength 
Peel strength is one measure of how well a TPE has bonded to a rigid substrate. 
While there is no agreed upon standard test for TPEs, the various methods employed by TPE suppliers are derived from accepted thermoset rubber and adhesive test methods. 
The RTP Company test for peel strength is RTP TP-55, which is a variation of ASTM D6892/D903. This test entails pulling apart a T-bar that was over-molded via an insert molding process. The units of measure for this test are pli; RTP Company has a minimum standard of 15 pli for its bonding grades. 
Cohesive Bond Failure 
This failure mode indicates that either the TPE or the plastic substrate failed before the bond between the two materials did. 
Very often the TPE material tears. This type of failure is not always a bad property indication if the material has high tear strength. It can in fact indicate very high bond strength. 
Adhesive Failure 
This failure mode occurs at the interface of the TPE and the rigid material. Most bond failures are some combination of both adhesive and cohesive failures. 
100% adhesive failure would indicate that all of the TPE pulled off the substrate. Go to Part 2: Choosing the Correct TPE.
